1. How do I know if I am affected?
You will be affected by the regulations if you:

  • manufacture or import batteries
  • manufacture or import electrical equipment which includes batteries
  • are a retailer supplying batteries to end users

2. Am I a "Large Producer" or a "Small Producer?"
The regulations deem you to be a Large Producer if you place in excess of a tonne of portable batteries onto the UK market in a calendar year. You are a small producer if you place under a tonne onto the market in a calendar year.


3. I am a "Large Producer" - when do I need to register with a Compliance Scheme?
You must be registered with a Batteries Compliance Scheme (BCS) by October 15th 2009.


4. I am a "small producer" - what do I need to do?
You will need to contact the Environment Agency and register with them for the compliance year. They will provide you with all the necessary requirements and inform you of the data you need to collate.


5. I am a retailer/distributor of batteries only - do I need to register?
No - however you have other obligations; details of which can be found in our "Distributors and Retailers" section.


6. Do I need to include the battery weights in with my WEEE submission too?
No - as of 2010 you will be required to separate out the weights of your batteries from your WEEE and submit them separately.
